A plug valve having a tapered plug that seats in a first flow passage in a valve body is disclosed. The plug defines a second flow passage cooperating with the first flow passage so that by rotating the plug through 90° the plug valve is fully open or fully closed. The plug valve is opened by rotating the plug in a counterclockwise direction which also lifts the plug in an axial direction away from the valve seats. When the plug valve is rotated in a clockwise direction, the plug is rotated and moves in a downward axial direction into engagement with the valve seats. A resilient biasing member is provided between the valve seats and the valve body to continuously bias the valve seats into engagement with the plug.
