A method of permanently coloring hair comprises applying to the hair, hair dye composition which comprises a tinctorially effective amount of at least one catechol, a persulfate oxidizing agent which is present in the composition in an amount equal to about one to four equivalents relative to the catechol and sufficient buffering agent to provide a composition having a pH of from about 7 to 11. The buffering agent is selected from the group consisting of TRIS and bicarbonate which allows the composition to remain in contact with the hair for a period of time sufficient to achieve a desired color.
