A bumper system for an automotive vehicle includes several piston rods, which are connected to a bumper beam at several joints, from one side, and each is connected to a piston from the other side. Each piston is fitted in a cylindrical bore to retain a certain amount of compressed gas and is movable along a straight line from an extended to a reacted position. Pistons are provided with locking mechanisms that allow them to move in one direction only; from the extended to the retracted positions. A temperature control system is provided to maintain the gas temperature within a curtain range. The vehicle travels while the pistons are in the extended position. An impact on the bumper beam causes the pistons to move inside the cylindrical bores, increasing the gas pressure up to the critical pressure value and changing the state of the gas to a liquid.
