Spindle-shaped goethite particles are pro- duced by oxidizing a ferrous carbonate intermedi- ate in the presence of a growth modifier, or alte- natively by changing the flowrate of oxidizing gas during oxidation. The goethite particles thus pro- duced have a narrow size distribution, high aspect ratio and are substantially dendrite-free. These properties make the inventive goethite particles suitable for use rn preparation of high density magnetic recording media.
Selon l'invention, on produit des particules de goethite fusiformes en oxydant un intermédiaire d'un carbonate ferreux en présence d'un agent modificateur de croissance, ou encore en changeant le débit du gaz oxydant pendant l'oxydation. Les particules de goethite ainsi produites présentent une granulométrie étroite, un rapport d'allongement élevé et ne contiennent sensiblement pas de dendrite. Ces propriétés rendent les particules de goethite de l'invention aptes à être utilisées dans la préparation de supports magnétiques d'enregistrement à haute densité.
