ABSTRACT A seal for an elongated axially movable machine part, such as a piston or rod, having a wiper ring 2 supported in a first groove 1 radially open towards the machine part 4. The wiper ring is urged against the machine part by an O-ring 3 of rubber-elastic material, which abuts the radially outer surface of the first groove and rests in a second groove on the wiper ring. The wiper ring bears on the machine part along at least two circular seal edges 7.7', spaced apart in axial direction. The second groove opens radially outwards in the axial direction and provides a support surface 8 for the O-ring and axially overlaps the radial planes 9,9' containing the respective seal edges as a continuous surface.
