A method and apparatus is described for improving the efficiency of any machine that uses an algorithm that maps to a higher dimensional space in which a given set of vectors is used in a test phase. In particular, reduced set vectors are used. These reduced set vectors are different from the vectors in the set and are determined pursuant to an optimization approach other than the eigenvalue computation used for homogeneousquadratic kernels. An illustrative embodiment is described in the context of a support vector machine (SVM).

Méthode et appareil permettant d'améliorer l'efficacité de toute machine utilisant un algorithme qui exécute un mappage à un espace dimensionnel plus élevé dans lequel est utilisé un ensemble donné de vecteurs lors d'une phase d'essai. En particulier, des vecteurs d'ensembles réduits sont utilisés. Ces vecteurs d'ensembles réduits diffèrent des vecteurs de l'ensemble donné et sont déterminés conformément à une approche d'optimisation autre que le calcul de valeurs propres, utilisé pour les noyaux quadratiques homogènes. Une version est présentée à titre d'exemple relativement à une machine à vecteur de soutien (SVM).
