The present work is designed as a laboratory investigation of reactions under the conditions relevant to rotary hearth furnace. Composites of iron ore and pulverized coal and/or coke, in the form of agglomerates are placed in a muffle furnace at a preset temperature in air atmosphere and heated one dimensionally by radiation for different length of time. The degree of metallization and physical state of the sponge depend on temperature/time relationship; ratio of ore to solid fuel, the content of volatile matter; the size of agglomerate as well as the heating pattern, etc.
