A radial tire having a tread of cap/base structure, which tread has a thickness of not more than 6 mm, characterized by the base tread comprising a rubber composition of 16 to 30 parts by weight of short fibers and 30 to 60 parts by weight of carbon black having an iodine adsorption amount of 60 to 130 mg/g, or a rubber composition of 10 to 30 parts by weight of short fibers and 5 to 30 parts by weight of carbon black. The short fibers in the base tread may be oriented in either the peripheral or radial direction of the tire. The tire has a low rolling resistance and is excellent in both steering stability and ride comfort.
