2095859 9114498 PCTABS00007 A tubular membrane module (20) for example for use in ultra-filtration has a tubular shell (22) made of standard PVC pipe and moulded PVC end fittings (26, 28). A series of membrane tubes (30) within the shell (22) extend between coupling members (32) at both ends (22a, 22b). The coupling members (32) fit closely inside the shell (22) and end fittings (26, 28) and are secured in place using epoxy adhesive. A transverse wall (54) in each coupling member (32) is provided with sockets (52) which receive the ends of the tubes (30) and in which the tubes are secured by a similar adhesive. Each socket (52) has a blind end (52a) that receives the end portion of the tube so that the tube is protected from shear effects due to fluid entering the tube under pressure in use.
