ABSTRACT The invention provides a safety device for the rotatable setting knob of a thermostat, serving to prevent inadvertant movement from the desired setting and also serving to protect the thermostat from accidental breakage. The safety device is in the form of a split ring having internal splines on one section for interlocking engagement with the flutes on the knob, and internal grooves and ribs for interlocking engagement with corresponding ribs and grooves on the nipple connecting the thermostat to a valve housing. The split ring may be clamped in position surrounding the knob and the nipple to strengthen the connection between the valve housing and the thermostat and to prevent rotation of the knob relative to the valve housing.
