An arrangement to protect software, particularly freely distributed application software, against utilization without permission of the copyright holder. By encrypting the software employing a key (k1) which is different from that key (k2) which is employed in the decryption, better protection is obtained against unauthorized utilization when the decryption key is kept secret to the user. Further improved security is achieved by additionally executing scrambling-descrambling of the communication between the computer in which the software is utilized and the external unit in which the decryption key is stored. Also, the external unit is arranged such that it returns to the host computer, the result from its processing of data received from the host, the result then being utilized in the further execution of the respective program.

L'invention concerne un système permettant de protéger un logiciel, en particulier un logiciel d'application distribué librement, contre une utilisation sans l'autorisation du propriétaire. En cryptant le logiciel avec une clé (k1) qui est différente de la clé (k2) qui est utilisée pour le décryptage, on assure une meilleure protection contre l'utilisation non autorisée quand la clé de décryptage est gardée secrète pour l'utilisateur. En outre, on améliore la sécurité en effectuant l'embrouillage/désembrouillage de la communication entre l'ordinateur dans lequel le logiciel est utilisé et l'unité externe dans laquelle la clé de cryptage est conservée. Egalement, l'unité externe est réalisée pour retourner à l'ordinateur hôte le résultat du traitement des données reçues de l'hôte, ce résultat étant utilisé pour la poursuite de l'exécution du programme respectif.
