ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the preparation of 3- (organothio)aldehydes by reacting a mercaptan with an .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde under actinic radiation in the absence of an oxygen-containing gas wherein the mercaptan and aldehyde are mixed in substantially eguimolar amount and the reaction temperature ranges from about 2° to less than 60°C.
