The annular body of the mold (38) in the unit has an annular case (68) at the bottom. The case is thick axially of the mold, forming the greater portion of the axial length of the mold at the outer periphery at the top, the case has an annular plate forming flanges (74) overhanging the case and enabling the unit to be lowered into a casting table, and supported on the table at the flanges. The case defines the lower cavity opening, and the coolant outlet (58). The case is monolithic, and has an annular sump (75) at the tip covered by the plate (66) forming a coolant chamber. A graphite casting ring (152) may be circumposed about the inner periphery lining the upper end portion of the cavity; and a refractory hot top ring (118) may be circumposed about the upper end opening of the cavity.
