A guard for a hypodermic needle or needle cannula comprises a hub (1) for attachment to a needle (15) and a shield (2) which can be attached to the hub (1). The shield (2) is adapted to lie adjacent the needle (15) and has a lip (3) which projects outwardly to cover the tip (16) of the needle (15). An enclosure means (17) for the tip (16) of the needle (15) is provided located adjacent the lip (3). The hub (1) and the shield (2) each comprise complementary attachment means (13, 18) whereby the shield (2) can be attached to the hub (1) in a first and second relative positions. In the former, the needle (15) can be used and in this position the shield (2) is capable of moving away from the needle (15) to uncover the tip (16) as the needle (15) initially penetrates the body of a patient and of returning back towards the needle (15) to again cover the tip (16) as the needle (15) is withdrawn from the patient. By pulling the shield (2) towards the hub (1) in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the needle (15), the shield (2) is attached to the hub in the second relative position wherein the tip (16) of the needle (15) is enclosed by the enclosure means (17) and thereby locks the shield (2) in position with respect to the needle (15) so that the shield (2) cannot be flexed away from the needle (15) to uncover the tip (16) after use.

On peut tirer la gaine (2) en direction du manchon (1) dans un sens sensiblement parallèle à l'axe longitudinal de l'aiguille (15) afin de fixer la gaine (2) au manchon dans ladite seconde position dans laquelle l'extrémité (16) de l'aiguille (15) est entourée de la partie enveloppante (17), la gaine (2) étant désormais solidaire de l'aiguille (15) de sorte que l'on ne puisse plus la déformer et l'écarter de l'aiguille (15) pour mettre à nu son extrémité (16) après l'utilisation.
