Disclosed are methods for treating metal substrates, including ferrous substrates, such as cold rolled steel and elec-trogalvanized steel. The methods include contacting the substrate with a pretreatment composition that includes: (a) a group UIB and/or IVB metal an electropositve metal (c) free fluorine; (d) a metal fluoride salt formed from a metal which forms a fluoride salt having a pK sP of at least 11; and (e) water.

L'invention concerne des procédés servant à traiter des substrats métalliques, dont des substrats ferreux, tels que l'acier laminé à froid et l'acier galvanisé par électrolyse. Les procédés consistent à mettre en contact le substrat avec une composition de prétraitement qui comprend : (a) un métal du groupe IIIB et/ou IVB; (b) du fluor libre; (c) un sel de type fluorure de métal formé à partir d'un métal qui forme un sel de fluorure ayant un pKsp d'au moins 11; et (d) de l'eau.
