A B S T R A C T Regions within the extracellular portions of a fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) confer ligand specificity of the receptor. One such ligand specificity region (LSR) is included in the C-terminal region of the third immunoglobulin like domain of the FGFR and another in the second immunoglobulin like domain. By removing the LSR from an FGFR and replacing it with a corresponding LSR from another FGFR, a chimeric protein is obtained which can bind a ligand with a specificity of binding being determined by the inserted LSR.
