A novel method of and system for heterogeneous con- nectivity and universal and generic interfacing for distributed applications and processes residing in a wide variety of com- puting platforms communicating over varied transport facili- ties, through an integrated set of lower-level programs and routines that handle specific services (message/data recovery, security, directory services etc.) available from applications and processes within varied complex computing and commu- nications environments, and without having to deal with the idiosyncarsies of differing networks protocols devices multi- ple "standards", routing, recovery and other transport difficul- ties and differences. This is effected by novel single-function software modules or verbs, called application programming in- terface (API), that together provide a consistent and universal interface through which application programs/processes can ac- cess the messaging communications services in a manner that isolates the applications and processes from the confusing and fast-changing communications environment, as well as from differences in various computer operating systems, platforms and hardware.

L'invention concerne de nouveaux procédé et système permettant d'assurer la connectivité et l'interfaçage universel et générique pour des applications et des processus répartis résidant dans une grande diversité de plates-formes de calcul communiquant par une grande diversité d'unités de transport, par l'intermédiaire d'un ensemble intégré de programmes et sous-programmes de bas niveau gérant des services spécifiques (récupération de messages/données, protection, services d'annuaires) disponibles à partir d'applications et de processus dans divers environnements de communication et de calcul complexes, et sans qu'il soit nécessaire de tenir compte les idiosyncrasies des différents réseaux, protocoles, dispositifs, des normes multiples, de problèmes et différences d'acheminement, de récupération et de transport. Pour ce faire, on utilise des modules ou verbes de logiciel à fonction unique appelés interfaces de programmation d'application (API) qui constituent une interface cohérente et universelle par lesquelles les programmes/processus d'application peuvent accéder aux services de messagerie d'une manière isolant les applications et processus des environnements de transmission déroutants et changeant rapidement ainsi que des différences entre les divers systèmes, plates-formes et matériels d'exploitation informatiques.
