The present invention addresses a vitamin and a method for ameliorating psychotic and schizophrenic mental states that originate from biochemical imbalance. Brain disturbances such as paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations can result from a systemic NAD-deficiency. Additionally, impairments in prostaglandin mechanisms and/or blood circulation can have damaging repercussions on brain chemistry. A combination of oral flush niacin, supplemented with sustained-release niacin, is employed in a suggested high-dose regime. The immediate-release form of nicotinic acid initiates a prostaglandin-mediated surge of blood flow primarily to the truncal and facial subcutaneous vessels. Patients also experience a benzodiazepine-like effect from the flush niacin, which is capable of quickly crossing the blood-brain barrier. Anxiety and agitation are quelled within minutes of ingestion.
