The invention is a pastille consisting of coated chewable gum, which controls a chemical process for rendering teeth more resistant to tooth decay. The pastille has a coating which is soluble in the oral environment and releases fluoride ions while dissolving, and the body consisting of a flavoured chewable gum formulated in such a way as to be capable of releasing calcium ions. The fluoride ions, which are released as the coating of the pastille dissolves in the mouth, permeate the surfaces of the teeth. The mastication of the gum subsequently releases the calcium ions, from a variety of calcium salts mixed into the gum. The released calcium ions consequently react with the fluoride ions which were previously permeated into the teeth to form calcium fluoride precipitate, and other calcium-fluoride compounds in the teeth and on the surface of the teeth, which render the teeth more resistant to attack by bacterially produced acids. Thus making them more resistant to tooth decay.
