A method and apparatus of providing an electronic guide to television programming provides a headend database and processor which segments and categorizes programming information which is then broadcast in a hierarchy over an out-of-band channel. Individual subscriber's set-top terminals access and display the guide information direct from the headend server in response to input from the subscriber. Alternatively, individual set-top terminals submit requests for particular guide information which are filled by the server serially over the out-of-band channel.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant d'établir un guide électronique sur les programmes de télévision. On utilise une forme de traitement en tête via une base de données et un processeur segmentant et classant par catégories l'information de programme, laquelle est ensuite diffusée selon une hiérarchie sur un canal hors bande. Les terminaux des coffrets d'abonnés individuels accèdent directement au guide, dont ils affichent le contenu, via le serveur de tête, en réponse à une opération d'entrée de l'abonné. Selon une variante, les terminaux susmentionnés soumettent des demandes d'accès à telle ou telle information du guide, et le serveur répond à ces demandes en série sur le canal hors bande.
