The invention relates to an absorbent article such as a diaper, an incontinence pad, a sanitary towel or the like, the article having a liquid- permeable upper surface and comprising an absorbent structure which comprises at least a first superabsorbent material and a second superabsorbent material. The first superabsorbent material is characterized in that it is an odour- inhibiting and/or bacteria-inhibiting superabsorbent material, and in that it has a higher absorption rate than the second superabsorbent material.
