ABSTRACT A gas generator (1) for an air bag, comprising a container (2) having a combustion chamber (3) therein, and a gas generating agent (5) and an igniter (7) accommodated in the combustion chamber (3), wherein at least a portion of the gas generating agent (5) is formed by a plurality of laminated plate-shaped molded members (5), and protruded and recessed portions (29) are provided on the plate-shaped molded members (5) so that close-contact surfaces (25) and noncontact surfaces (26) can be formed on overlapping surface of the adjoining plate-shaped molded members (5), a holding member (6, 6a) being provided for holding the gas generating agent so that the close-contact surfaces (25) are not separated from each other, and wherein, in the case where said container is made of aluminum, and an igniting agent (21) is contained in the igniter (7), said igniting agent being fired at a temperature in the range from 150 to 300°C within 3 minutes.
