The present invention is a method for a base station to transmit a data field of symbols. The method consists of generating a first data field of symbols, encoding the first data field to produce a second data field, spreading the first and second data fields using respective first and second channelization codes uniquely associated with respective first and second antennas and transmitting an RF signal including the first and second spread data fields over the first and second antennas. Preferably, the second data field has symbols that are the complex conjugates of the symbols of the first field.
