The tertiary alcohol .alpha.-[3-[(1E)-2-(7-chloro-2-quinolinyl)ethenyl]phenyl]- 2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)benzene--propanol, the (.alpha.S)-enantioner of which is an intermediate in the production of montelukast, is produced by reacting the novel lactone of formula (II) with a methylmagnesium halide in an ethereal solvent in the presence of lanthanum trichloride and lithium chloride. The lactone II can be prepared by reacting a corresponding hydroxyester with a Grignard reagent in the absence of a lanthanoid compound or with a strong base.

L'alcool tertiaire a-[3-[(1E)-2-(7-chloro-2-quinolinyl)éthényl]phényl]-2-(1-hydroxy- 1-methylethyl)benzènepropanol, dont l'énantiomère (aS) est un intermédiaire dans la production du montélukast, est obtenu par réaction de la nouvelle lactone de formule (II) avec un halogénure de méthylmagnésium dans un solvant de type éther en présence de trichlorure de lanthane et de chlorure de lithium. La lactone II peut être préparée par réaction d'un hydroxyester correspondant avec un réactif de Grignard en l'absence d'un composé lanthanoïde ou avec une base forte.
