The present invention provides an apple MADS-box protein having the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 that directs the flower bud development and fruit fleshiness; a gene encoding the protein; an expression vector containing the gene; a microorganisms transformed with the expression vector; an antibody specific for the protein; a method for detecting a transcript or protein expressed from the gene in flower buds which is useful in estimating future yield of fruit; and a process for preparing a transgenic plant containing the gene which produces enlarged female reproductive organs and thereafter enlarged fruits in a seed plant by ectopically expressing the gene.
