ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to compositions used for topical adminis- tration of griseofulvin and antibiotics of the lincomycin and erythromycin families. Various therapeutic methods for treating acne have been attempted including topical antibacterials, e.g. hexachlorophene, and systemic anti- biotics such as tetracycline and clindamycin. While the systemic antibiotic treatments have been effective, the topical antibacterial treatments have not been effective. The present invention provides a topical antimicrobial composition comprising compositions containing 0.1 to about 10% by wt. of griseofulvin or an antibiotic from the lincomycin or erythromycin families and about 5 to about 99.9% by wt. of 2-pyrrolidone or an N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone.
