An enhanced computer based method of managing the sale by auction of commodities and services utilizing a digital communication network comprising a server computer system linkable with a plurality of remote terminals is disclosed. In accordance with the method, a current ask price is automatically raised by a controlled amount if a predetermined criteria for doing so is satisfied. Likewise, a current ask price is automatically lowered by a controlled amount if a predetermined criteria for doing so is satisfied. Although not limited, the method is particularly adapted for the sale by auction of digital data which, in contrast to most commodities and services, may be offered by auction in virtually unlimited supply. Such digital data may be uploaded to the server computer system by the seller of the data and subsequently downloaded from the server computer system by a successful bidder or buyer. At the present time, the Internet provides an exemplary environment within which to implement the invention.
