A high-performance optical waveguide type optical modulator which is restrained in buffer layer contamination and dc drift when a signal electric field regulating area is formed in a buffer layer by a lift-off method or etching method, and is excellent in long-term reliability, the optical waveguide type optical modulator (10) comprising a substrate (11) having electrooptic effects, an optical waveguide (12) formed on the front layer of the substrate (11), a traveling wave type signal electrode (13a) and a grounding electrode (13b) formed on the substrate (11), for controlling guided light, a buffer layer (14) formed between the electrode (13) and the optical waveguide (12), and a dielectric layer (15) provided on the entire surface on the electrode (13) side of the buffer layer (14), wherein a signal electric field regulating area (16) having a width larger than the traveling wave type signal electrode (13a) and consisting of a material larger in refractive index than the dielectric layer (15) is formed between the dielectric layer (15) and the electrode (13a).
Un modulateur optique de type guide d'onde optique est immobilisé dans une contamination de couche d'amortissement et une dérive de cc lorsqu'une zone régulatrice de champ électrique au niveau des signaux se forme dans une couche d'amortissement par un procédé de décollement ou de gravure. De plus, ce modulateur a une excellente fiabilité longue durée. Le modulateur optique (10) de type guide d'onde optique comprend un substrat (11) ayant des effets électro-optiques ; un guide d'onde optique (12) formé sur la couche frontale du substrat (11) ; une électrode de signaux (13a) de type onde progressive ; une électrode de terre (13b) formée sur le substrat (11) pour le contrôle de la lumière guidée ; une couche d'amortissement (14) formée entre l'électrode (13) et le guide d'onde optique (12) et une couche diélectrique (15) placée sur toute la surface (13) de la couche d'amortissement (14) côté électrode (3). Une zone régulatrice de champ électrique au niveau des signaux (16), ayant une largeur supérieure à celle de l'électrode de signaux (13a) de type onde progressive et constituée d'un matériau à l'indice de réfraction supérieur à celui de la couche diélectrique (15), est formée entre la couche diélectrique (15) et l'électrode (13a).
