The use of sesquiterpenes and, in particular sesquiterpene lactone endoperoxides, such as artemisinin and analogs thereof, for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infections. Artemisinin, analogs of artemsisnin and some crude Artemisia extracts were tested in vitro against DNA-viruses, retro- viruses and Flavivirida, (an important family of human and animal RNA pathogens). These compounds were also screened for anti-tumor activity. Strong activity of artemisinin was noticed against the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). As pestiviruses, such as BVDV, share many similarities with hepatitis C virus (HCV), we can conclude that endoperoxides in general and artemisinin more specificly have efficacy as treatments for hepatitis C viral infections.
Selon cette invention, les sesquiterpènes et plus précisément les endoperoxydes de sesquiterpènes lactones, tels que l'artémisinine et ses analogues, sont utilisés pour traiter les infections par le virus de l'hépatite C. L'artémisinine, les analogues de l'artémisinine et certains extraits bruts d'Artemisia ont été testés in vitro contre les virus d'ADN, les rétro-virus et les Flaviviridae (qui constituent une importante famille de pathogènes d'ARN humain et animal). Ces composés ont également été criblés pour que leur activité anti-tumorale puisse être déterminée. On peut observer la forte activité de l'artémisinine contre la diarrhée virale bovine. Du fait que les pestivirus, tels que la diarrhée virale bovine, partagent un grand nombre de similitudes avec le virus de l'hépatite C, on peut conclure que les endoperoxydes en général et que l'artémisinine en particulier constituent des traitements efficaces contre les infections virales de l'hépatite C.
