A device and method for protecting a blood vessel. The device (7) may be a stent (2), for insertion in a large artery such as the ascending aorta (1), and may be combined with a filter (16). The device includes an outer wire frame rather than a stent.The stent may be made of at least one layer of mesh (12), which is typically attached or mounted to the arterial wall. Typically the size of the apertures of the mesh (12) at the top portion of the stent is smaller than the bottom portion of the stent. The device and method are particularly useful in preventing blockages of flow to the brain, but have other uses as well. An electric charge (14) may be placed on the device, for example, to prevent blood components from collecting.
Selon cette invention, un dispositif et une méthode permettent de protéger un vaisseau sanguin et par conséquent des tissus de l'organisme contre des dommages causés par une matière particulaire telle qu'un embole. Ce dispositif peut être un stent destiné à être introduit dans une grande artère telle que l'aorte ascendante, et peut être associé à un filtre. Dans un mode de réalisation de cette invention, ce dispositif comprend un maillage extérieur plutôt d'un stent. Le stent peut être composé d'au moins une couche de maillage qui est habituellement fixée ou montée sur la paroi de l'artère. Une partie seulement du stent est habituellement fixée (par exemple au niveau d'une structure annulaire de renforcement). La taille des ouvertures du maillage situé sur la partie supérieure du stent est habituellement inférieure à celle de la partie inférieure du stent. Le dispositif et la méthode de la présente invention servent en particulier à prévenir les obstructions de la circulation vers le cerveau, mais sont également utilisés dans d'autres applications. Une charge électrique peut être placée sur le dispositif, notamment pour empêcher les composants du sang de former des caillots.
