Electrofusion fitting comprising a plastic body, and a heating element embedded in a surface of the plastic body. The heating element is under a tension or compression which is resisted by the material of the plastic body. Melting of the material of the plastic body by the heating element releases said tension or compression so that mixing of plastic materials and mechanical gripping takes place at the interface between the electrofusion fitting and a plastic component to which it is to be joined.
