PCT/US 91/02021 APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR CALORIMETRICALLY DETERMINING BATTERY CHARGE STATE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is an apparatus and a method for determining the state of charge of a rechargeable battery (300). It comprises a means (350) for charging the battery (300), current sensors (305), heat detectors (301,302) for detecting the heat emanating from the battery (300) during charging, with the heat being the complement of the charge acceptance percentage, and a processor (360) for storing a mathematical charge acceptance model for providing the relationship between the charge acceptance percentage and the state of charge of the battery (300), and for calculating the the state of charge of the battery (300) from the heat detected by the heat detectors (301,302) and the charge acceptance model. An accurate measure of battery charge state is produced while the battery (300) is being charged. The present invention is adaptable to existing battery power systems without the need for significant additional com- ponents and is applicable to any system utilizing recharge- able batteries.
