There is provided a centrifuge of the vertical type wherein a centrifuge basket is rotated inside a housing to remove liquid from the material, and there are provided means for removing the de-watered material or sludge from the interior of the basket comprising a screw conveyor which has an inlet and an outlet, the screw conveyor being moveable vertically into and out of the basket in a manner such that the inlet can be positioned proximate the basket wall and the de-watered material. The screw conveyor has scraper means associated with the inlet to feed the material from the basket wall to the conveyor and to a discharge outlet.
