- 10 - Abstract of the Disclosure A variable volume axial through-flow catalyst responsive to temperature which has (a) a chamber means having an axial through-flow catalyst for promoting conversion of automotive engine exhaust gases, (b) an inlet for substantially coaxially introducing engine exhaust gas flow to the chamber, and (c) temperature responsive flow direction means (i.e., bimetallic vanes) for concentrating the exhaust gas flow through a fraction of said catalyst volume during catalyst light-off and through one of either the remainder or through the total volume of said catalyst during other flow periods. The fraction in one example is the central core of a cylindrically shaped catalyst volume and in another example is the radially outermost region of such catalyst volume.
