There is described a process for the purification of alkyl alkylacetoacetates of the general formula: (see formula I) wherein R1 is a C1-C10-alkyl group and R2 is a C1-C4-alkyl group. In this process an alkyl alkylacetoacetate which contains an alkyl alkenylacetoacetate of the general formula: (see formula II) wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above, and/or further by-products as an impurity, is converted with an ester of the general formula: (see formula III) wherein R2 is as defined above, in the presence of a strong base, into an intermediate which is separated off.
