23233-259 Abstract The present invention relates to the use of com- pounds of the general formula I I Image in which R denotes alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, which can be optional- ly substituted, as crosslinkers in the preparation of hydrogels. As the compounds of formula I are soluble both in water and organic solvents, the hydrogels so prepared have high gel strength in addition to high absorption capacity. They are useful as absorbents for aqueous fluids, for the formulation of cosmetic preparations, as strengtheners and/or binders of fibrous surface structure containing reactive groups and as drilling muds and cement slurries in oil production.
