The invention relates to a process for the preparation of crystalline glycolic acid from an aqueous glycolic acid solution. The invention comprises removing the water from the aqueous glycolic acid solution at elevated tempera- ture and mixing the resulting melt with crystal nuclei and cooling the melt. A particular variant of this process comprises removing the water from the aqueous glycolic acid solution in the course of a period of 5 minutes. The advantages of the process lie in the fact that crystalline glycolic acid can be produced indus- trially in an environmentally friendly manner which is further low in impurities, in particular in poly- glycolides.
