In continuous casting of metal, in particular of steel into billet and bloom cross-sections, moulds (3) comprising a copper tube are used. In the case of the mould according to the invention, the mould cavity cross-section at the inlet end, as opposed the mould cavity cross-section at the billet outlet end, has cross-sectional enlargements in the form of outward bulges (6) which are evenly distributed over its cross-sectional periphery. The dimension of the outward bulges (6) reduces in billet running direction and the cross-sectional shape of the billet is therefore shaped as it passes through the mould cavity (4). In order, with such moulds, to achieve as uniform a mould wall temperature as possible and reduced mould wear, it is proposed that the opposing outer surfaces (9 - 12) of the copper tube should be parallel or cylindrical. 11
