The present invention relates to a process for the recovery of rhodium from acetic anhydride-containing residues, which are produced in the carbonylation of methanol and/or methyl acetate and/or dimethyl ether. A carboxylic acid having 2 to 5 carbon atoms is added to the residue, the mixture is heated, 1 to 10 mol of methanol per mol of acetic anhydride are added, the constituents boiling more readily than the carboxylic acid are distilled off, the mixture is cooled and the rhodium-containing residue is separated.
