A device (PMD) and a method for measuring the performances characteristics of a communication path of a telecommunication packet switching network (ATM) by transmitting test packets through this path while other life traffic is operating. The test packets are life data communication packets of the life traffic and of which the communication data has been replaced by performance measurement data. No traffic of test packets is thereby added to the existing life traffic and the latter is not disturbed by the measurements.

L'invention est constituée par un dispositif et une méthode utilisés pour mesurer les caractéristiques de performance d'un trajet de communication dans un réseau de télécommunication à commutation de paquets MTA en transmettant des paquets de test dans ce trajet en présence d'un trafic simultané. Ces paquets de test sont constitués de paquets de données du trafic dans lesquels les données à transmettre ont été remplacées par des données de mesure de performance. Aucun trafic de paquets de test n'est par conséquent ajouté au trafic du moment, lequel n'est pas perturbé par les mesures.
