The transmission of ATM cells often requires measuring the frequency of the transmitted ATM cells of a connection. In general, measurements are carried out within a fixed time interval. This is problematic in that this type of measurement does not take into account the type of connection. The invention helps to solve this problem by using the traffic characteristic of the ATM cells as a criterion to determine the moment when a measurement should be carried out.
