Variable area flowmeters are widely used for measurement of fluid flow for many applications. The essential working part in these devices is a float, moving under the action of fluid flow within a flowtube; the geometry is such that the flow area between the tube and the float varies with float position so that the equlibrium position where flow and gravity forces balance indicates flowrate. The float often uses guide rods for centering the float within the tube so that stable flow readings may be obtained. This invention relates to a novel concept for a self-guided float that eliminates the need for such guides, resulting in a very compact and economical design.
