The invention relates to a device and to a method for packaging flat objects into a packaging material web. The device comprises a conveyor device with an essentially planar conveyor surface for conveying the flat objects one after the other and distanced to one another in a conveyor direction. At least one processing tool with a processing-active zone is present for processing the packaging material web in a region between two objects in a processing region (B). At least one object downholder is present, which is designed in a manner such that in the processing region (B) it engages and thereby "calms" at least one of the objects, such as by holding down the object. A springing-back of the objects from the conveyor surface, which is deflected or deformed on account of the processing pressure, is counteracted in this manner, such that uncontrolled displacements of the objects are avoided.
