A system for administering the distribution of digitally distributable works, comprises an encapsulation facility operable to encapsulate a digitally distributable work with predetermined conditions of use to create an encapsulated work, and dis-tribution means for distributing the encapsulated work from a transferor in possession thereof, to a transferee. The encapsulated work has a state which is alterable between an enabled state in which the digitally distributable work is unconditionally enabled for use, and a disabled state in which the digitally distributable work is disabled for use. The system also has a switching means operable to switch the state of the encapsulated work to be in the disabled state upon transfer of the digitally distributable work form the trans-feror to a transferee, and to be in the enabled state when the predetermined conditions of use are complied with by the transferee. An administration facility stores distribution data relating to a distribution chain of the digitally distributable work and distributes a portion of a predetermined purchase price paid by the transferee for the digitally distributable work to a number of the preceding transferors in the distribution chain.
L'invention porte sur un système visant à administrer des travaux distribuables numériquement, ce système comprenant un équipement permettant d'encapsuler un travail distribuable numériquement affecté à des conditions d'utilisation prédéterminées afin d'obtenir un travail encapsulé, et un moyen de distribution chargé de distribuer le travail encapsulé d'un auteur de transfert en possession de ce travail à un destinataire de transfert. L'état du travail encapsulé varie entre un état autorisé selon lequel le travail numériquement distribuable est autorisé sans condition d'utilisation, et un état interdit selon lequel le travail est interdit d'utilisation. Le système possède également un commutateur permettant de faire passer le travail encapsulé devant arriver à l'état interdit lors de son transfert, et devant arriver à l'état autorisé le lorsque destinataire du transfert s'est conformé aux conditions d'utilisation prédéterminées. Une fonction d'administration enregistre les données de distribution relatives à une chaîne de distribution du travail distribuable numériquement et distribue une partie d'un prix d'achat prédéterminé payé par le destinataire du transfert pour le travail numériquement distribuable par rapport à un nombre d'auteurs de transfert ayant préséance dans la chaîne de distribution.
