A downhole assembly having a deflecting tool, a milling tool and a securing apparatus. The deflecting tool is adapted for selective static positioning within a well casing. The milling tool is adapted to mill a window in the well casing. The milling tool is secured to the deflecting tool by the securing apparatus during deployment of the assembly and the securing apparatus is adapted to be released by rotation of a portion of the milling tool. The downhole assembly is deployed by the method of securing the milling tool to the deflecting tool with the securing apparatus, deploying the assembly downhole, commencing the milling operation by rotating at least a portion of the milling tool and releasing the securing mechanism by action of rotation of the at least one portion of the milling tool.
