The present specification describes a method of determining effectiveness of a sterilization process which includes the steps of i) contacting a sample to be sterilized and a biological indicator comprising microbial spores with a sterilant to give exposed spores, ii) contacting the exposed spores with a medium selected to germinate the spores, iii) determining a rate of germination of the exposed spones to determine the effectiveness of the sterilization process. The germination rate of the exposed spores may be readily determined using spectrophotometric techniques with or without staining of germinated spores. The present method is applicable for different types of known sterilants including but not limited to steam, ethylene oxide, radiation, heat, sodium hypochlorite, polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine, sodium dichlorocyanurate, low temperature steam-formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen peroxide plasma or mixtures thereof. The specification also describes a biological indicator system which uses the present method.
La présente invention concerne une technique de détermination de l'efficacité d'un procédé de stérilisation, ladite technique comprenant les étapes suivantes: i) mise en contact d'un échantillon à stériliser et d'un indicateur biologique contenant des spores microbiennes avec un agent stérilisateur dans le but d'obtenir des spores exposées, ii) mise en contact des spores exposées avec une substance sélectionnée pour la germination des spores, iii) détermination d'un taux de germination des spores exposées afin de déterminer l'efficacité du procédé de stérilisation. Le taux de germination des spores exposées peut être immédiatement déterminé par des techniques spectrophotométriques avec ou sans coloration des spores germées. La technique selon l'invention est applicable à différents types d'agents stérilisateurs: vapeur, oxyde d'éthylène, rayonnement, chaleur, hypochlorite de sodium, iode-polyvinylpyrrolidone, dichlorocyanurate de sodium, formaldéhyde-vapeur à basse température, glutaraldéhyde et peroxyde d'hydrogène, plasma de peroxyde d'hydrogène ou mélanges de ces différents agents, etc. L'invention concerne également un système d'indicateur biologique utilisé selon la présente technique.
