A method for programming a thermostat facilitates the input of a desired time-temperature schedule for variable heating or cooling cycles. A programming code is entered into the thermostat which is translated by the thermostat into the desired time-temperature schedule. The schedule and programming code can be input remotely via a networked computer, telephone or other suitable input device which is compatible with the thermostat's software.
