ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing methanol comprises reacting hydrogen with carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide to form a methanol containing product. This product is contacted with a liquid organic absorbent having between 3 and 16 carbon atoms and which is chemically inert with respect to the product, thereby to absorb methanol into the absorbent. Methanol is recovered from the methanol-rich absorbent. The mass proportion of absorbent to methanol recovered is less than 10 mass units absorbent for each mass unit of methanol.
