A tieback positioning and placement tool includes a housing having a longitudinal bore, and a shaft disposed in the housing for slidable movement through the bore. The shaft extends through the bore and is exposed at each end of the housing. The shaft has a first end formed for connection to a drill pipe and an opposite end formed for supporting a tieback hanger. A key is retained by the housing and is biased radially outwardly. The key releasably locks the shaft in position in the housing.
