A method of and apparatus for generating optimum limestone particles of a size to meet the sulfur capture requirements in a circulating fluid bed combustor, and either further optimizing the limestone particles to a fineness for use in the sulfur capture by dry scrubbing the hot gas flow from the older direct fired boilers, or compacting the limestone particles into a size suitable for continuing the sulfur capture in the circulating fluid bed combustor so there is substantially no loss of the limestone.
